Strategic update: Proposed amalgamation of Fedhealth and Medshield
10 November 2025

10 November 2025 - Fedhealth and Medshield today announced they have mutually agreed to terminate discussions on a proposed amalgamation of the two medical schemes.
Although one stage of the process had been completed with a recommendation for approval from the Competition Commission, several regulatory requirements remained. One of these steps involved both schemes continuing detailed assessments and evaluations to ensure that the interests of members of both schemes are protected and advanced by an amalgamation.
To this end, separate and independent actuarial evaluations were commissioned by both Boards as part of their fiduciary duty to focus on members and their best interests. After an extensive review, the Boards of both schemes have decided that an amalgamation at this time would not be in the interests of the schemes’ members. While all engagements have been conducted in a positive and co-operative spirit, it has been mutually agreed that discussions on amalgamation should now be ended.
While there is disappointment that the proposed amalgamation will not proceed as envisaged, management of both schemes remain on good terms.
